The University of Miami received a $147,395 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program (CFDA 10.310). The grant will fund research from June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2026 to understand factors driving plant microbiome recruitment and identify genes involved in enabling plants to select more beneficial and environmentally resilient microbiomes. The University will conduct a field experiment, genomic sequencing, community modeling, and transcriptomic analysis to assess microbiome composition, functionality and stability in domesticated and wild citrus plants. The research aims to develop a mechanistic understanding of beneficial microbiome formation to support plant breeding efforts addressing current environmental and pathogen challenges in agriculture. As the prime recipient, the University of Miami will perform the research without subawards.
