The University of Florida received a three-year $849,409 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program (CFDA #10.310). The grant will fund research to elucidate interactions between plants, ammonia-oxidizing archaea, and mycorrhizal fungi in agricultural systems. Specifically, the University of Florida will work to enrich culture representatives of globally predominant soil ammonia-oxidizing archaea, identify associations between these archaea and crop rhizospheres and mycorrhizal fungi, and characterize physical and chemical interactions between nitrifiers, fungi and plants in laboratory models. The research aims to generate insights that could enable improved agricultural practices for increased nitrogen use efficiency and sustainability. The grant also supports training for soil microbiologists at various academic levels.
