Sasya Inc. was awarded a $175,000 Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. The award will support the development of a probiotic cell factory to produce and deliver performance supplements directly in the intestinal tract of livestock. Growing restrictions on antibiotics and growth promoters in the livestock industry have created a need for alternative supplements to enhance animal growth and prevent infection. Sasya aims to address this need through synthetic biology and engineered probiotics. The one-year project will combine developments in synthetic biology to develop a probiotic chassis with improved intestinal expression, metabolic structure conducive to high product formation, and a self-destruction switch triggered outside the GI tract for biocontainment. Successful completion of this research could provide a platform for producing supplements to benefit various livestock species, in line with USDA SBIR priorities to develop new agricultural technologies.
