The University of California, Davis will receive $1,000,000 under a Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (AFRI, CFDA No. 10.310).

The award will support research and extension activities to leverage real-time social media analysis and disease modeling to improve preparedness for and response to outbreaks of virulent Newcastle disease in Southern California. Specifically, the University will link social network analysis-based surveys on attitudes and behaviors collected through its existing mobile app with data extracted from social media platforms including Twitter, Craigslist, and BackyardChickens.com to better inform parameters in the USDA's existing VND disease model for the region. Extension efforts will then be targeted based on the results. Additionally, the multi-source datasets will complement the state diagnostic laboratory's passive surveillance of backyard poultry respiratory diseases to enable a quicker response to potential VND outbreaks and reduce industry risk in Southern California and beyond. The award period is February 1, 2022 through January 31, 2026.
