This three-year, $650,000 project grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program will fund research at the University of Connecticut to generate new knowledge about preferential trade agreements (PTAs), their impact on global agricultural and food trade, and consequences for US farm businesses and employment. Using newly collected PTA data and statistical modeling techniques including random forest algorithms and a three-way gravity model adapted with a machine learning approach, the project aims to investigate factors influencing PTA formation and provisions as well as assess effects on US sector structure, conduct, and jobs. Findings seek to better inform federal policies supporting US farmer and rancher competitiveness and market participation in informing global supply chains.
