The project will examine how sulfur-based redox modifications regulate lipid metabolism proteins in...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University $294,000 on March 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program (CFDA 10.310) to develop foundational knowledge and tools for managing emerging viral diseases in upland cotton. The project integrates proteomics, molecular virology, genomics, and bioinformatics to address Cotton Leafroll Dwarf Virus...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Texas Tech University received a $294,000 project grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), effective August 1, 2025, through July 31, 2028. The award supports the development and enhancement of CottonSense, a high-throughput phenotyping technology that utilizes RGB-D (Red-Green-Blue-Depth) cameras on ground-based platforms to...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Texas State University $741,696 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, to investigate tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) as natural plant defense activators to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. The research team will track how these small molecules move from infection sites to protect entire plants, identify the cellular components they interact with to...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Texas Tech University System $468,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on April 1, 2026. Texas Tech University will develop virus-mediated, tissue culture-free genome editing methods for tomato and pepper crops, eliminating reliance on inefficient tissue culture regeneration. The research will demonstrate these tools by introducing abiotic stress tolerance, water use efficiency, and...
- This $299,999 Project Grant was awarded on May 1, 2025 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The grant aims to identify potent antagonistic compounds and their inhibition mechanisms against Pythium ultimum, the causal agent of root rot in corn. The research will support the development of biocontrol agents and biopesticides, which will be tested in subsequent field...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of California, Berkeley $370,152.01 on July 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program (CFDA 10.310) to elucidate the molecular mechanism of CMD2-type resistance to cassava mosaic disease and related geminivirus diseases, test whether this resistance mechanism functions across multiple crop species including tomato, cotton, and corn, and...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. received a $294,000 Project Grant award from the Institute of Food Production and Sustainability under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) (CFDA 10.310) beginning August 1, 2025 and concluding July 31, 2028. The project will investigate the mechanisms underlying the exceptional durability of the B12 resistance gene in cotton, which has successfully resisted all known strains of cotton bacterial blight...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $300,000 to Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service on May 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to evaluate a drought-resilient double cover-cropping system combining cotton and cowpea production under strip tillage in drought-prone regions. The project evaluates the impact of the cotton-cowpea double cover-cropping rotation on soil chemical and physical properties, soil...
This $200,323.63 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) through its Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program (CFDA #10.310) will fund research at Texas Tech University on Fusarium wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (FOV) in cotton. The project aims to identify genetic polymorphisms and gene expression characteristics related to FOV resistance in cotton through RNA sequencing analysis of eight cotton genotypes with known resistance profiles when exposed to FOV4, FOV1 and root-knot nematode pathogens. Key defense genes will be validated and used to develop RNA-based markers to aid FOV4 resistance breeding. Under a sub-award of $25,000, the Agricultural Research Service's Southern Plains Area will assist with genetic analysis and development of RNA markers for FOV4 resistance. The research is intended to expedite breeding for FOV4 resistance in upland cotton and provide solutions for stakeholders within two years of the projected August 2022 completion date.
