About this award

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe has been awarded a $1,250,000 Project Grant under the Tribal Sexual Assault Services Program (TSASP) from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women. This 5-year grant, effective October 1, 2023, supports the Tribe's efforts to create, maintain, and expand sustainable sexual assault services for its community.

Specifically, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe's Victim Services Program will employ a sexual assault advocate and counselor to: 1) provide accompaniment advocacy, transportation, and immediate financial assistance to victims; 2) offer counseling and support groups; 3) conduct sexual assault outreach activities; and 4) ensure training for project victim service providers. These services aim to deliver intervention, advocacy, and related assistance to adult, youth, and child victims of sexual assault, as well as non-offending family members, within the Tribe's service area in Nevada.

Description

Sasp was created by the violence against women and department of justice reauthorization act of 2005 (vawa 2005) and is the first federal funding stream dedicated solely to the provision of direct intervention and related assistance for victims of sexual assault. Overall, the purpose of sasp is to provide intervention, advocacy, accompaniment (e.g., accompanying victims to court, medical facilities, police departments), support services, and related assistance for adult, youth, and child victims of sexual assault, non-offending family and household members of victims, and those collaterally affected by the sexual assault. Tsasp supports projects to create, maintain, and expand sustainable sexual assault services provided by tribes, tribal organizations, and nonprofit tribal organizations within indian country and alaska native villages. Pyramid lake paiute tribe (plpt) is a federally recognized tribe which has a three-county service area located 35 miles northeast of reno, nevada. The service area includes lyon, storey, and washoe counties. Through this five-year continuation tsasp project, plpt victim services program (VSP) will continue providing sexual assault services for survivors. Specifically, plpt VSP will employ a sexual assault (SA) advocate and counselor to 1) provide accompaniment advocacy, transportation, and immediate financial assistance to victims, 2) provide counseling and support groups, 3) conduct SA outreach activities in each of the three communities, and 4) ensure training for the project victim service providers.
