About this award
The U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women awarded a $1,250,000 five-year Tribal Sexual Assault Services Program (TSASP) grant to the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe - White Earth Band. The funding will allow the Dove Program to maintain and expand services providing intervention, advocacy, accompaniment, and related assistance for adult victims of sexual assault within the White Earth Reservation tribal community. Key services include core and comprehensive victim services, monthly support groups, community outreach, and efforts to improve programming for LGBTQ2S+ individuals. The TSASP grant, authorized under 34 U.S.C. 12511(e), supports sustainable sexual assault services in Indian country and Alaska Native villages to address high rates of victimization in these communities.
Description
Sasp was created by the violence against women and department of justice reauthorization act of 2005 (vawa 2005) and is the first federal funding stream dedicated solely to the provision of direct intervention and related assistance for victims of sexual assault. Overall, the purpose of sasp is to provide intervention, advocacy, accompaniment (e.g., accompanying victims to court, medical facilities, police departments), support services, and related assistance for adult, youth, and child victims of sexual assault, non-offending family and household members of victims, and those collaterally affected by the sexual assault. Tsasp supports projects to create, maintain, and expand sustainable sexual assault services provided by tribes, tribal organizations, and nonprofit tribal organizations within indian country and alaska native villages. White earth band of chippewa indians is one of six federally recognized tribes under the minnesota chippewa tribe. The reservation encompasses all of mahnomen county and portions of clearwater and becker counties in northwest minnesota. Through this five-year continuation project, the dove program will maintain and expand programming to provide intervention and related assistance for adult victims of sexual assault, including core and comprehensive services; conduct community outreach and awareness; conduct monthly support groups; and focus on improving programming for LGBTQ2S+ community members.
