About this award

The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the Regents of the University of Idaho $1,811,628 under the Payments to Agricultural Experiment Stations Under the Hatch Act (CFDA 10.203) formula grant program, effective October 1, 2025.

The award funds multistate agricultural research conducted through the University of Idaho's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station, and UI Extension. Faculty participate in nine multistate research areas: environmentally and economically sustainable crop and livestock integrated systems; animal, plant, and human disease prevention; agricultural and food-based process and product innovation; managing soil, water, air, and biological resources; human health, nutrition, and food safety; urban environment and small acreage agriculture; youth education and development; individual and family well-being; and community development. Research spans the lab bench to landscapes and from individuals to communities. Projects address issues relevant to Idaho and the Western United States, though studies on human health, nutrition, food safety, and community development have national impacts.

A Multistate Review Committee reviews initial proposals, solicits external peer review, makes recommendations to the Agricultural Experiment Station Section, and transmits approved projects to USDA for final approval. Faculty within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences request to join multistate projects and identify specific objectives to which they will contribute effort.

Period of performance runs through September 30, 2027. Performance occurs in Idaho.

The multistate review committee (MRC) reviews initial proposals and requests input from external peer reviewers. The MRC then makes recommendations to the ESS and, if approved, transmits the project to USDA for final approval. Faculty within cals request to join multistate projects and identify specific objectives within each project to which they will provide effort. Multistate research areas where UI faculty participate include 1) environmentally and economically sustainable crop and livestock integrated systems; 2) animal, plant and human disease prevention; 3) agricultural and food-based process and product innovation; 4) managing soil, water, air and biological resources; 5) human health, nutrition and food safety, disease prevention; 6) urban environment and small acreage agriculture; 7) youth education and development; 8) individual and family well-being; 9) community development. Research is conducted at the lab bench to landscapes and with individuals to communities as appropriate for the question being addressed. Projects address issues relevant to idaho and the western united states although studies on human health, nutrition, food safety and communities have national impacts.
