Description
Cornell AES an integral part of three colleges advances research on food & agriculture systems, the environment, applied economics, & community & individual development. By doing so, cornell AES improves people's lives & contributes towards cornell's l& grant mission of discovery, engagement, & advancement of learning. Cornell AES links cornell's world-class research facilities with one of the nation's most comprehensive statewide cooperative extension systems. Through this engaged, interactive system we address pressing issues that directly affect the health & welfare of the state & beyond. Many of today's most urgent societal concerns from childhood obesity to invasive species to global climate change-are not bound by state or national boundaries. Every aspect of our operation from staff development to forest management to field practices is viewed through the lens of sustainability. Cornell AES, agritech, & CCE work collaboratively to determine planned programs that align with nifa priority areas & direct funds to individual research & extension projects as well as projects that integrate these two domains. The approach used to integrate the work of the two experiment stations & CCE is designed to serve the citizens of NYS & improve the human condition through excellence in scholarship linking research, non-formal teaching, & extension to 'real life' challenges & opportunities. Critical issues include:agriculture & food systems: projects support a new york (NY) food & agriculture industry that is diverse, sustainable, & profitable, & that produces a safe, reliable, & healthy food supply. Special consideration will be given to projects that help address the challenges farmers are facing from changing climates, changing pest pressures & pesticide regulatory environments, & the need to manage operations that are not only productive & profitable, but also provide relevant ecosystem services. Climate change & sustainable energy: projects develop &/or implement practices to reduce or mitigate agriculture & food systems impacts from climate change. Projects may also focus on renewable energy production from agriculture or forest resources & energy conservation & renewable energy that benefits agriculture & food systems. Special consideration is given to projects that will develop implementable strategies, linked to agriculture & forestry, for meeting NY's climate act by reducing use of carbon-based fossil fuels, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating fugitive methane emissions within the agricultural sector, boosting energy efficiency, supporting renewable energy adoption, & maximizing carbon sequestration in NY's &s & forests.natural resources & the environment:projects lead to improved use of the state's available l& & natural resources, particularly for agriculture & forestry industries.programs engage individuals & communities in conserving & sustaining the quality, diversity, & accessibility of NY's natural resources & environmental assets.nutrition, food safety & security, & obesity prevention:projects lead to childhood obesity prevention; improved youth, family, & community nutrition; & food security & food safety.4-h youth develo pment/children, youth, & families:projects focus on life skill development, stem opportunities for youth, human development, & the quality of home & work environments.for hatch or mcintire-stennis supported research there should be a connection with agriculture & food industries.community & economic vitality:projects empower entrepreneurship & workforce DE velopment, agriculture & food systems development, community & economic development, & community sustainability & resilience.for hatch & mcintire-stennis supported research these activities must have a connection to agriculture & food industries.
