About this award
The Department of Housing and Urban Development Public and Indian Housing Office awarded $168,000 to Baraga Housing Commission on September 18, 2025, under the Public Housing Capital Fund (CFDA 14.872) to address safety and security emergencies at public housing developments in Baraga, Michigan.
The award funds one-time capital assistance for safety and security items that could not be absorbed within the recipient's annual capital fund allocation. Baraga Housing Commission, a municipal housing authority subsidiary of the Village of Baraga, Michigan, administers the award directly without subcontractors. Performance extends through September 17, 2027, with work performed in Baraga, Michigan.
The award is part of HUD's Emergency and Non-Presidentially Declared Natural Disaster set-aside for public housing agencies. Approximately 2,770 PHAs serving nearly one million units in all fifty states and territories are eligible. Due to high demand, HUD awards grants through lottery until set-aside funds are exhausted. PHAs may receive one safety and security grant application per federal fiscal year, with a maximum award of $250,000. A PHA is ineligible if it previously received safety and security funding for the same development or developments for which current funding is requested. The safety and security emergency must occur within the same federal fiscal year that funding is being requested.
