About this award
The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 4 awarded $1.625 million to the State of Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks on January 1, 2026, under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education and Safety program (CFDA 15.611), a formula grant funded by excise taxes on firearms, ammunition, and archery equipment.
The award establishes infrastructure for controlled flooding of six waterfowl impoundments on the 891-acre Trim Cane Wildlife Management Area. The project develops two surface water reservoirs and installs a system of lift pumps and irrigation lines to replace reliance on rainwater, which has historically failed to fill impoundments reliably in many years. The infrastructure ensures annual public waterfowl hunting opportunities while providing quality habitat for waterfowl and wetland-dependent wildlife.
Performance runs through December 31, 2027, with all work performed in Mississippi.
Description
This will be accomplished through the development of two surface water reservoirs and a system of lift pumps and irrigation lines. Since establishment the impoundments have relied on rainwater to fill them and there are many years when the WMA never receives enough water to flood impoundments. This project would ensure public waterfowl hunting opportunities annually while also providing quality habitat for waterfowl and other wetland dependent wildlife.
