About this award

The U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service awarded the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks $636,741 under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education and Safety program (CFDA 15.611) on August 1, 2025. This formula grant supports a furbearer management initiative designed to develop and implement an efficient survey methodology for monitoring furbearer populations across Kansas. The project addresses growing public interest in furbearer management decisions by establishing a standardized monitoring protocol that provides robust, large-scale distribution and abundance data for multiple furbearer species to inform science-based wildlife management policies.

The deliverables under this award focus on identifying and implementing survey methodologies suitable for adoption as part of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks' standard monitoring protocols. By improving existing furbearer monitoring methods and establishing efficient data collection procedures, this project will generate the scientific information necessary to resolve public speculation regarding furbearer population trends and support evidence-based decisions regarding population management strategies. The project runs through October 31, 2027.

Description

The status of certain game populations has resulted in widespread speculation about furbearer abundance and trends and interest by the public in expanding efforts to reduce furbearer populations. Science derived information regarding changes in distribution and abundances for multiple furbearer species is needed to inform these discussions. However obtaining good quality data at large spatial scales can be difficult and logistically challenging for wildlife managers and existing methods of furbearer monitoring in kansas could stand to be improved. The overall goal of this project is to identify an efficient survey methodology that can be implemented as part of a standard monitoring protocol by kdwp providing robust data to inform decisions on furbearer management across kansas.
