About this award
The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission received a $846,000 Formula Grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education and Safety program (CFDA 15.611) awarded on July 1, 2025. The project will deliver technical assistance to 712 landowners and hunting clubs by June 30, 2026, with the goal of improving localized deer herd management through the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP). By providing technical guidance to landowners, hunting clubs, local governments, and other organizations, the project aims to optimize deer herd densities and improve overall herd populations in terms of quality, health, and reproductive rates.
The anticipated outcomes extend beyond herd management to include enhanced forest health conditions, reduced environmental and agricultural damage from overabundant deer populations, and the collection of thousands of deer biological data records annually to support statewide wildlife management efforts. Additionally, the project will support hunter recruitment, retention, and reactivation efforts, while promoting regulated hunting as a responsible wildlife management tool. No sub-recipient activities are associated with this award.
