About this award
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) received a $400,000 formula grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education and Safety program (CFDA 15.611), effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2030. This award supports the expansion and enhancement of the Caswell Shooting Range, one of ten shooting ranges currently operated by NCWRC (six directly managed and four in partnership with local municipal governments). The initial phase of this grant funds architectural and engineering design services to support facility improvements, with construction activities to be incorporated through a future grant amendment.
The Caswell Shooting Range expansion addresses increased demand resulting from North Carolina's population growth and the NCWRC's strategic goal of providing shooting range opportunities within 50 miles of every state residence. The design work will support the addition of amenities including additional shooting lanes, a shotgun range, administrative offices, classroom space, and restroom facilities to enhance the safety and usability of the range for target shooting activities. The Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education and Safety program, authorized under the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937, supports state wildlife agencies in implementing conservation, wildlife management, and hunter education initiatives, with shooting range development and maintenance constituting an eligible project category under the program's scope.
Description
The goal of the ncwrc shooting range program is to provide shooting range opportunities within 50 miles of every residence in north carolina. Due to the states population growth the caswell shooting range located near two major pollution areas has increased dramatically year over year. The caswell shooting ranges were constructed to provide shooters with a fun and safe environment to practice target shooting. However the range has seen an increase in users over the past few years prompting US to revisit and add amenities such as more shooting lanes a shotgun range offices classroom space and restrooms. The first step in moving this goal forward is to have architectural and engineering design drawn up. Construction will be included in this grant as an amendment
