Description
Acquisition of 318.5 acres of contiguous, undeveloped land for wildlife and public use in morgan county, utah will allow the utah division of wildlife resources (DWR) to remove an inholding in the east canyon wildlife management area (WMA) and increase the size and connectivity of the WMA and other public lands. This acquisition will be managed under the same habitat management plan and access plan as the current east canyon WMA. This acquisition will protect crucial winter and summer range for mule deer and substantial year-long habitat for rocky mountain ELK and moose. IT is also considered crucial year-long habitat for black bear. The purchase of this property will incorporate this inholding into the WMA expanding opportunities for habitat protection, big game migration and recruitment, and wildlife-related recreation. In addition, this acquisition will build upon the original WMA s purpose of not only preserving and protecting big game wintering range, but also to reduce deer and ELK depredation on surrounding private properties. With roughly 75% of mule deer habitat in wildlife management unit 5 being privately owned, the WMA provides unique protection of historical crucial big game winter range while also providing potential protection for private lands from depredation.
