About this award
The U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded a $198,090 Formula Grant under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education program (CFDA 15.611) to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Department of Lands and Natural Resources (DLNR). This 2-year grant, effective April 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, will enable the CNMI DLNR, in partnership with the Institute for Bird Populations, to establish a Tropical Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survival (TMAPS) bird banding program on the island of Rota. The program will utilize standardized mist-netting and capture-recapture techniques to monitor demographic changes in Rota's forest bird populations, including endemic and endangered species. Demographic data collected from the banded birds, along with weather and habitat information, will be used to analyze population status, identify drivers of population change, and inform future management decisions for these avian species.
Description
Rota is home to many incredible avian species including endemic and endangered species . Cmni division of fish and wildlife (DFW) wildlife section monitors forest bird populations through our annual breeding bird surveys under the avian monitoring grant . However, these simple annual monitoring efforts do not provide the fine-scale data needed to identify drivers of population change. The cnmi DFW, in partnership with the institute for birdpopulations will establish a tropical monitoring avian productivity and survival (tmaps) bird banding program onrota. The tmaps program utilizes an application of standardized constant effort mist-netting and modern capturere-capture analytical techniques as an effective means for monitoring demographic changes in forest birdpopulations. We will use weather and habitat data along with the demographic data collected from the bandedbirds to record and describe patterns of population status, change and predict population change for futuremanagement purposes. This grant constitutes year 2 of a five-year monitoring program in rota.
