Description

By evaluating seasonal habitat use and movement patterns of urban resident and nonresident migratory blacktailed deer in the rapidly expanding medford or metro area this work will provide critical information for landscape management wildlife management and urban planning.while blacktailed deer populations on public lands throughout much of western oregon have declined in recentyears deer in urbansuburbanagricultural regions appear to be increasing. The results of our work will provideinformation on how habitat use and survival differ between urban and nonurban deer and begin to shed light onwhy demographic trends differ. Finally longterm conservation of sustainable populations of migratory blacktaileddeer is vital for ecosystem function and to provide recreational opportunities e.g. hunting and wildlifeviewing for oregons growing population. Protection and maintenance of highquality habitat on the summer andwinter ranges and ensuring habitat connectivity along migratory routes is necessary to achieve this goal. Ourwork will result in clear management recommendations related to seasonal home ranges and most importantlymigratory routes which will direct landscape management and habitat conservation efforts in the region.
