Description

Changes in habitat and forest management practices in recent decades has reduced the availability of open and early successional habitat where high quality deer forageis abundant particularly on federally owned lands. Previous research conducted in the region by odfw hasdocumented low rates of fawn recruitment and relatively low survival of adult females. Wildlife managers at odfwand other agencies require estimates of the populations demographic rates e.g. SEX ratio age structure andsurvival and an understanding of the ecological processes that drive these processes to make informed decisionssuch as setting harvest numbers. The aims of this research are twofold. First we aim to evaluate therelationship between the nutritional landscape and blacktailed deer demographic rates i.e. survival andfecundity in the western cascades. Second we will test the efficacy of several methods and modeling approachesto accurately estimate blacktailed deer population size age structure and SEX ratios.
