Description
Conduct research to develop information that managers can use in making decisionson how habitats of ELK mule deer and other ungulates in oregon and other portions of western north america canbe effectively managed. Documenting relationships between ungulates and habitat can influence land managementpractices travel management plans and longterm forest or habitat planning. Additionally investigations ofhabitat use can identify critical landscape features that allow cover and escapement from hunting pressure.finally habitat use is a critical factor influencing population dynamics of ungulates and documenting habitatuse is an important first step in understanding ungulate population dynamics. Our current research consists of two OBJECTIVES1 complete a publication describing migration corridors andhabitat use of pronghorn in summer and winter 2 complete publication to assess changes in ELK body FAT inrelation to climate change 3 conduct an assessment comparing habitat use of ELK using camera trap data and datafrom GPS collars 4 validate a western oregon ELK habitat use model with location data from SW oregon 5CONDUCT an assessment of mule deer survival in relation to environmental and habitat covariates and 6 conductan assessment of mule deer survival in relation to movement and habitat near roads. 7 capture and place gpscollars on 240 ELK in the blue mountains.
