Description
The california department of fish wildlife s (cdfw) north central region (NCR) wildlife management program (WMP) is responsible for the geographic region which includes portions of the northern coastal range, sacramento valley, northern SAN joaquin valley, and central to northern sierra. This area spans seventeen counties and contains a network of over 82,000 acres of department owned land. The breakdown of these lands is as follows: type c or unstaffed wildlife areas (WA 61,403 acres), ecological reserves (ER 10,725 acres), and nondesignated lands (10,000 acres). These properties are hereafter collectively referred to as conserved lands. These lands were originally purchased by or transferred to cdfw by the wildlife conservation board (WCB) and other agencies. Though the precise purpose of the acquisitions has varied through the years, the management objectives remain the same: conservation and preservation of wildlife habitats and supporting compatible public use. In accordance with this mission, the cdfw manages compatible public use activities, which may vary from property to property and include: hunting, fishing, hiking, wildlife watching, bicycling, horseback riding, nature study, research, and other suitable forms of outdoor recreation.
