Utah s natural landscape is changing. Urban sprawl commercial development natural resource exploration andextraction expanding forms of outdoor recreation climate shifts recurring catastrophic wildfire generationalland ownership differences and changes in hunting values are all contributing factors to a decrease in thequality and quantity of publicly accessible hunting areas and healthy wildlife habitats. Utah s walkin accessprogram is a cooperative development of land access leases between private landowners and the utah division ofwildlife resources. Through formal written agreements the landowner is compensated with a standardized annualpayment in exchange for opening their land for free public access to hunt or trap. These leases openapproximately 65000 acres of private land that would not otherwise be accessible to the public. Participatinglands are encouraged to make habitat improvements and continue to be productive for future wildlife. Publicusers are encouraged to respect and care for the private land to ensure that the privilege of access remains.
