Description

This project supports portions of the california department of fish and wildlife (cdfw) wildlife diversity program s (WDP) efforts to monitor, conserve and restore nongame birds and mammals in california, including numerous listed and special status species. WDP scientific staff are responsible for the management, conservation, and recovery of native nongame birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. This project will fund staff to conduct surveys for shorebirds, participate in numerous working groups, advisory committees, stakeholder groups, and science teams, participate in the pacific flyway council, prepare species conservation strategies and management actions, and manage data and model the habitats of multiple species of conservation concern. Focal species addressed by project include the state and or federally listed mammals sierra nevada red FOX, wolverine, and mohave ground squirrel the state and or federally listed birds california condor, snowy plover, least tern, bell s vireo, bank swallow, willow flycatcher, and yellow-billed cuckoo numerous mammal species of special concern, including american badger and snowshoe hare and numerous nongame shorebirds. The overarching project goal is to monitor and conserve these and additional species to ensure the long-term viability of their populations. In california, 178 animal species are listed as threatened or endangered pursuant to the california endangered species act (cesa) and or the federal endangered species act. Additionally, 213 animal species have been designated species of special concern. Cdfw staff implement diverse conservation actions to protect these species and their habitats, as well as numerous additional nongame species. Additional surveys and data analysis are needed for many of these species, and ongoing recovery and management efforts (often involving staff from other agencies, universities, and groups) are in place for many species. This project will fund cdfw staff to continue to gather data on imperiled species and to work to conserve a variety of special status and nongame birds and mammals.
