About this award

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $666,702.55 Formula Grant under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education program (CFDA 15.611) to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC). The funding will support a project to study how baiting practices influence the distribution and abundance of mammalian nest predators, and assess the relationship between baiting and predator density on artificial nest fate in Oklahoma. This grant is a subaward to Oklahoma State University, which will assist ODWC in conducting the research study. The project aims to provide information to help ODWC address concerns about low turkey population recruitment in the state related to nest predation. The grant period runs from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2028.

Description

Odwc is concerned about low turkey population recruitment statewide in oklahoma and studies (including ongoing odwc funded research in oklahoma) consistently indicate that mammalian nest predation is a cause of nest loss. Additionally odwc is concerned with the potential nontarget effects of anthropogenic baiting. We propose a project to gain information on how baiting influences the distribution and relative abundance of mammalian nest predators. Additionally this project will experimentally evaluate the relationship of baiting and mammalian predator density on artificial nest fate including how predators discover artificial nests.
