About this award
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1 awarded a $714,806 Formula Grant to the American Samoa Government Office of the Governor, Division of the Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources. This grant is funded through the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act (CFDA 15.611) and will support projects to restore, conserve, manage, and enhance wild bird and mammal populations and their habitats in American Samoa. Key activities include data collection and monitoring of seabird species, such as white terns, tropicbirds, noddies, and petrels, that have significant breeding populations in the territory. The grant period spans from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2026.
Description
Common species include white tern, white-tailed tropicbird, brown noddy, red-footed booby, brown booby and greater frigatebird. Tutuila and TAU also hold significant breeding populations of nocturnal seabird species including the tahiti petrel (globally near threatened) and tropical shearwater, as well as possibly herald petrel and the polynesian storm-petrel (globally endangered). However, data collection on seabirds is currently limited and restricted to a few focused short-term projects (such as recent work by ARC plotting the distribution of nocturnal seabird species using acoustic sensors).
