Description

California bighorn sheep have thrived in the john day river canyon since the population was established in 1989.this herd is currently the largest metapopulation in oregon and has consistently been shown free of disease.however, this area is subject to increasingly frequent threats from wildfires, drought, and climate change. Adetailed understanding of the demographics, resource selection patterns, forage availability, and diet quality isimportant for guiding future population and landscape management in the area, and has implications for management of other bighorn populations that are struggling to deal with similar threats. We will study this healthy herd to inform future management of this population and others around the state. Specific objectives will focus onunderstanding habitat use patterns by developing resource selection functions, understanding nutritional ecologyby sampling vegetation and fecal pellets for available quality and diet selection, quantifying detailedpopulation demographic parameters and factors affecting those parameters. We conduct this study with a pair ofgraduate students (M.S.) through university of idaho working with DR. Ryan long. One masters student willconduct the habitat and nutritional research components, the other student will conduct the demographics work.odfw will be actively engaged throughout the process via participating on each of the graduate committees. Odfw representatives on committees will be andrew meyers and DR. DON whittaker, one per committee.
