Description
Utah s natural landscape is changing. Urban sprawl, commercial development, natural resource exploration and extraction, expanding forms of outdoor recreation, climate shifts, recurring catastrophic wildfire, generational land ownership differences, and changes in hunting values are all contributing factors to a decrease in the quality and quantity of publicly accessible hunting areas and healthy wildlife habitats. Utah s walk-in access program is a cooperative development of land access leases between private landowners and the utah division of wildlife resources. Through formal written agreements, the landowner is compensated with a standardized annual payment in exchange for opening their land for free public access to hunt or trap. These leases open approximately 65,000 acres of private land that would not otherwise be accessible to the public. Participating lands are encouraged to make habitat improvements and continue to be productive for future wildlife. Public users are encouraged to respect and care for the private land to ensure that the privilege of access remains.
