About this award
The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 4 awarded the Georgia Department of Natural Resources $974,525 under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education and Safety federal grant program (CFDA 15.611) to conduct research and management activities to understand and support ruffed grouse populations in Georgia. Key deliverables include roadside counts of grouse, deployment of automated recorders to detect grouse calls, surveys of small game hunters to better understand harvest levels, and genetic testing to analyze grouse movement across the landscape. The funding will support these efforts through December 2027 to address declining grouse numbers restricted to high elevation areas and inform potential management changes to prevent the species from disappearing from the state.
