About this award

This $4.22 million formula grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 6 supports the development of analytical tools to aid Montana's adaptive elk management program through June 2027. Funded under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education and Safety program (CFDA 15.611), the award recipient Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, & Parks will create models to better understand factors influencing elk populations and distributions across Montana's ecological systems. Grant funds will also support integrating habitat, predator harvest, and elk harvest recommendations into management programs to achieve population objectives. A $222,034 subaward to the University of Montana funds additional analytical tool development to support the adaptive management program. The Pittman-Robertson program aims to restore, conserve, and enhance wild birds and mammals through state fish and wildlife agencies.

Description

These tools will allow managers to better understand what types of factors influence populations and distributions in different ecological systems and develop management programs that integrate habitat management, carnivore harvest and ELK harvest recommendations to achieve ELK population objectives.
