About this award

The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 5 awarded the Commonwealth of Massachusetts $505,000 under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education and Safety federal grant program (CFDA 15.611) from April 1, 2022 through March 31, 2027. The funding will support efforts by the Commonwealth's Division of Fisheries & Wildlife to gather information on waterfowl species in Massachusetts and the Atlantic Flyway through banding, marking, and tracking programs. Population and hunter surveys will also be conducted to help assess stakeholder interests and ensure management decisions are biologically sound. Data collected will be used to develop models for proper waterfowl management in the state and flyway. Intended beneficiaries are the general public who use and appreciate these natural resources. No subrecipient activities are specified under this Formula Grant award.

Description

This is achieved in part through banding and otherwise marking waterfowl to track movements, determine recovery and survival rates of juvenile and adult birds and create a database for developing appropriate models used in waterfowl management. Population surveys and periodic hunter surveys allow biologists to assess the desires of stakeholders while ensuring such decisions are biologically sound. Intended beneficiaries are the public who use and appreciate these natural resources. There are no subrecipient activities.
