Summary
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) awarded a Cooperative Agreement valued at $760,000 to the University of California, Davis, effective September 25, 2025, through June 30, 2030, under the FDA Research program (CFDA 93.103). The California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS) Toxicology Section will enhance the FDA's capacity to test animal and human foods for chemical contamination by providing surge capacity during food safety emergencies involving intentional or accidental chemical contamination of human food or animal feed. Leveraging its expertise as California's state veterinary diagnostic laboratory, CAHFS will draw on demonstrated past performance in food-related emergency response to support the FDA's mission of protecting the food supply.
Additionally, CAHFS will conduct surveillance analysis of livestock feeds produced in California through a collaborative partnership with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). Under this arrangement, CDFA will provide feed samples collected according to FDA and Livestock Feed and Feed Monitoring (LFFM) specifications to the CAHFS laboratory for chemical analysis. Test results failing to meet regulatory requirements will be reported to both the FDA and CDFA, enabling rapid identification of emerging contamination threats. This partnership builds on four years of successful cooperation between CAHFS and CDFA on animal feed testing activities.
