About this award
The Food and Drug Administration awarded the Colorado Department of Agriculture a $843,500 cooperative agreement on September 25, 2025, under the FDA Laboratory Flexible Funding Model (LFFM, RFA-FD-25-007) to conduct microbiological testing of human and animal food products and expand laboratory analytical capabilities.
The Colorado Department of Agriculture's Division of Laboratory Services, Biochemistry Laboratory, will conduct 250 microbiological analyses of human food samples under Analytical Track A1 and 100 microbiological analyses of animal food products under Analytical Track A3. The recipient will also expand its laboratory capabilities by participating in Analytical Track A8, Microbiology Capability Advancement. Work supports the federal Integrated Food Safety System goal by enhancing state food testing surveillance capacity across human and animal food product microbiological analysis.
Performance runs from July 2025 through June 30, 2030, with work performed at Broomfield, Colorado. The award is classified as a cooperative agreement under the FDA Research program (CFDA 93.103), which supports research, demonstration, education, and information dissemination activities across public health and regulatory domains.
Description
FDA laboratory flexible funding model (lffm) RFA-FD-25-007 project summary - overall proposed project dates: july 2025 to june 2030 colorado department of agriculture, division of laboratory services- biochemistry laboratory overall: project summary the colorado department of agriculture (CDA) biochemistry laboratory (BCL) is seeking funding under FDA funding opportunity RFA-25-007, laboratory flexible funding model (lffm) FDA-FD-25-007.the colorado department of agriculture is committed to working with the FDA to enhance the capacity and capabilities of state human and animal food testing laboratories to support the overall goal of an integrated food safety system (ifss). The CDA supports the goal of the microbiology analytical tracks A1, A3, and A8 and a coordinated sampling program to improve food testing surveillance programs through the microbiological analysis of human and animal food products, including capability and capacity. Our research plan for these three microbiology analytical tracks and associated sampling projects establishes that the CDA biochemistry laboratory (CDA-BCL) meets the eligibility requirements for this funding opportunity. Furthermore, our research plan demonstrates that the CDA-BCL is competent and currently has the capability to achieve the program requirements and goals outlined in the funding opportunity, including the proper laboratory facilities and equipment, credentialed sampling program, organizational structure, personnel, management system, food testing capabilities, and laboratory quality management system. Through overall funding requested, the CDA-BCL will: ● conduct 250 microbiological analyses of human food samples through A1 - microbiology human food product testing ● conduct 100 microbiological analyses of animal food products through A3 - microbiology animal food product testing. ● expand our laboratory's capabilities by participating in analytical track A8: microbiology capability/capacity development. CDA-BCL proposes to implement the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (lamp) protocol as a primary salmonella screening method and to integrate the FDA BAM chapter 7 to detect and isolate campylobacter.
