Description

This proposal will support the goal of the office of surface mining reclamation and enforcement (osmre) appliedscience program in the development of science-based technologies to address environmental and safety topicsrelated to coal mining. The proposer is one of the authors and the programmer of the surface deformationprediction system (sdps) which is a software package initially developed in the late 1980S and upgraded throughthe years. The objectives of this project are as follows:validate the dynamic subsidence methodology (subsidence development methodology) by cross-validation with fieldmeasurements. Sdps already includes a dynamic subsidence (or subsidence development) module, but validations wereperformed using data collected several decades ago when panel dimensions where smaller and mining rates wereslower. Using current data, the dynamic subsidence prediction module will be validated again. Note that changesin the mining rate implies that the dynamic edge effect that is used for these calculations will also change as afunction of mining rate. In addition, the dynamic strain, slope and horizontal displacement modules are not fullydeveloped. The dynamic strain, slope and horizontal displacement routines will be developed and validated usingmeasured movements above modern high extraction operations.create a procedure that will address prediction of ground movements under dipping seam conditions. Modellingsubsidence under such conditions has been encountered in a few US cases, and the solution was not alwaysstraightforward, as currently, sdps assumes that the seam is horizontal, and IT uses the average seam elevationto perform all subsidence calculations. A module will be developed where seams will be converted to horizontal, and elevations of surface points will be modified to reflect the change in overburden depth. Although thisprocess is mostly targeting seams dipping more than 5 degrees IT will also be validated with data collected forlow DIP seams. The deliverables will include an updated sdps software package that will be made available to OSM and stateagencies. This will honor previous similar agreements with OSM for funded proposal through virginia tech, where iparticipated as researcher and copi.deliverables will also include a number of publications that will address both objectives.
