Description

Project abstract for task agreement under master cooperative agreement P23AM01371BETWEEN the united states department of the interior, national park service and university of wyomingtitle: inventory and assess non-ICE context high-elevation archeological resources impacted by climate change, trident plateau, two ocean plateau, and absaroka range, yellowstone NP15.945: cooperative research and training programs resources of the national park systemmostly at a park level, projects encompass a broad range of research, operational, and educational activities across all aspects of cultural resource stewardship activities, including but not limited to inventory, monitoring, research, rehabilitation, reconstruction, restoration, preservation, documentation, data recovery, education, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. This IRA project responds to the need to fill a significant information GAP in the knowledge of pre-contact and post-contact human use of the high elevation, ICE-free regions in yellowstone national park (YNP) through archaeological documentation. This project will use these foundational data to complete climate change-driven baseline inventories of critically endangered archaeological resources, identified on high elevation landforms that are subjected to increased wildfire risk and erosion. Data will be used to develop and refine rapid assessment tools and predictive threat models. These will assist NPS managers to accelerate short and long-term management decisions regarding strategic climate adaption and treatment planning efforts and cultural resource protection strategies. These actions will be evaluated in their effectiveness in our response to climate change-driven impacts, and results integrated into regional and park-specific inventory and monitoring efforts. The project area includes high-elevation, mountainous portions of YNP within the states of wyoming and montana. Beneficiaries include state and local governments, federally recognized indian tribal governments, nonprofit organizations, educational or scientific institutions, associations, individuals.
