Description
The recipient will complete an architectural vulnerability assessment of selected structures within tumaccori national historic park (tuma). To accomplish this goal, the recipient will use past, present, and future climate data to identify changing patterns and trends of weathering and specifically deterioration and to inform revised site preservation methods in response to these changes. The end result of this response phase is to develop a preservation approach that takes into account new material mixes (soils, amendments), application techniques (shelter coats, grouting), as well as seasonal timing of applications to better withstand increasing climate-related impact to the units. Tribal consultants will be involved in the project with descendent communities, creating opportunities for tribal youth and others responsible for cultural preservation to build resiliency to climate impacts. Understanding traditional ecological knowledge from the tribes perspective will help build better alternatives to preservation materials, applications, and preservation workforce. This agreement fulfills the public purpose of engaging the recipient, partners, community, and visitors in shared environmental stewardship. This project will provide educational and training opportunities for emerging professionals in historic preservation to further develop skills in, and knowledge of, historic preservation through participation in preservation training courses. Participants will apply classroom knowledge of historic preservation concepts in a real-world environment and work alongside technical experts to enhance preservation skills and knowledge. Participants will be engaged with a variety of skilled preservation practitioners in the NPS and elsewhere, thereby broadening their professional network. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the variety of preservation needs of an exemplary collection of heritage resources within NPS units in the west, and complete special projects focused on their particular interest areas within the field of historic preservation. The scientific community and researchers external to the NPS will gain new knowledge through research and the dissemination of research related results.
