Description

Programming supports a comprehensive network of cooperative study units to facilitate cooperative research, technical assistance, education, and training to inform science-based management of the national park system. The study units facilitate multi-disciplinary science and integrated information products across multiple geographic regions of the national park system. The wall street mill, in the north pion mining historic district, consists primarily of a timber frame structure housing a two-stamp mill the mill served as an important regional hub for milling operations in the northern pion mining district from 1931 until 1942, is listed on the national register of historic places, and is one of the most visited historic sites in the park. The condition of individual elements of the timber frame range from poor to fair, and require assessment, development of a preservation plan, and pilot treatment. This project will be conducted in two stages. In stage 1, the department of civil environmental engineering at the university of vermont (UVM) will conduct an assessment of the stamp mill and make recommendations for its preservation. In stage 2, preservation treatment of the mill will be addressed using a field school format to train field school participants in the assessment and treatment techniques appropriate to this early-20TH century structure. UVM students, NPS staff, and practicing professionals will be directly involved in all portions of the work the parks digital media team will document assessment and treatment phases, and create a series of social media posts and NPS website content that will disseminate both the results of this project and historic preservation philosophies to the public. Beneficiaries include state and local governments, federally recognized indian tribal governments, public private nonprofit organizations, nonprofit institutions of higher education, and the general public).
