Description

Performance goals - approximately 1,245,566 SF of historic fields along over 155,700 linear feet of wood line will be reclaimed from years of encroachment, after which park staff can perform preventive maintenance in the reclaimed areas. Project objectives - historic view sheds will be preserved, and visitors will enjoy a more accurate depiction of the landscape as IT appeared during the 1861 and 1862 battles that occurred. The park is challenged to maintain over 2027 acres of historic open pastures and fields to preserve the bucolic appearance of the 1861 and 1862 battles fought. On a repeating basis, IT is necessary to reclaim historic battlefield land along tree lines that have encroached through natural tree falls, limb drops and unrestrained growth of invasive vegetation. Approximately 28 acres of lost field areas along 155,700 linear feet of tree lines in several historic landscapes will be reclaimed throughout the park. Over several years, work will proceed from henry hill and the robinson farm to the groveton confederate cemetery, battery heights, chinn ridge, and at other significant landscapes in the park. Due to the sensitive nature of this historic earthen feature, all vegetation removal must be done using hand and hand-held power tools. IT is meticulous, time-consuming work which if left undone, will result in the entire area being overgrown and damaged by root systems by way of intrusion into the fabric through natural growth, or complete disturbance caused by the root-balls as trees and large bushes are uprooted during severe storms.beneficiaries: conservation legacyfor FY22, the chainsaw certified crew will reclaim the lost field areas along henry hill, battery heights, and bald hill tree lines. Most of the work will be completed by using hand tools removing fallen trees, limbs, and exotic plants. For FY23, the chainsaw certified crew will reclaim the lost field areas at the thornberry house and chinn ridge tree lines.
