Description

Pennsylvania new application for enhancing reviews and surveillance to eliminate maternal mortality - this project is in response to funding opportunity number: CDC-RFA-DP-24-0053 enhancing reviews and surveillance to eliminate maternal mortality. To address inequities in maternal deaths in pennsylvania (PA) and prevent future deaths, two mmrcs will continue to review deaths of perinatal people: the philadelphia mmrc that reviews deaths in philadelphia county and the PA mmrc that reviews deaths in the other 66 counties. By reviewing these deaths, the mmrcs, with both clinical and non-clinical members, identify opportunities for prevention with recommendations that address healthcare providers and systems, community-based organizations, insurance providers, local, state, and federal agencies, and other individuals involved in the care of pregnant and postpartum individuals. The mmrp will continue to partner with providers and organizations to receive records, abstract important details, create a case summary, present the case for timely review with the mmrcs, and analyze data to share findings with partners to inform, promote, and implement prevention strategies. PA will implement CDC's logic model to achieve outcomes. PA plans to achieve the following short-term outcomes by the end of the period of performance: increased timeliness, accuracy, and standardization of information available about pregnancy-related deaths, including mmrc identified opportunities for prevention; increased engagement and cooperation between mmrcs, partners, and communities to communicate information from data on pregnancy-related deaths; and increased availability of mmrc recommendations among communities, clinicians, public health practitioners, and decisionmakers. PA plans to achieve the following intermediate outcomes by the end of the period of performance: increased adoption of clinical and non-clinical policies and programs that reflect the highest standards of care; and increased implementation of recommendations that reach or consider the needs of populations d isproportionately affected by pregnancy-related mortality. The strategies and activities will lead to long-term outcomes such as reduced maternal complications of pregnancy during and in the year after the end of pregnancy, eliminated disparities in complications of pregnancy during pregnancy and in the year following, improved population health maternal health outcomes, and eliminated preventable pregnancy-related deaths.
