Description

Over the past eight years extensive site characterization, environmental monitoring and development of cost-effective bioreactor AMD treatment solutions has occurred at the two mine audits in the perry canyon creek watershed. This cooperative agreement will leverage existing monitoring and test-reactor data to design a sustainable and cost-effective remedy for the compromised waste rock piles and monitors the effectiveness and robustness of the remedy for the two audits in perry canyon with active AMD. Additionally, use of the previous work in perry canyon will be applied to a statewide assessment of BLM abandoned mine lands to determine which sites are at high risk of the postfire erosion hazards found to be particularly problematic at perry canyon. The expected outcomes are a remediated AML at perry canyon that no longer has exposed acid generating material, nor active AMD being discharged to receiving waters, as well as a list of other high hazard sites that might move from a stable state into an unstable problem following wildfire. In total, this project will assist the BLM in meeting DOI priorities by developing tools to sustainably develop natural resources and by restoring trust and being a good neighbor through AML restoration and shared conservation stewardship that will improve public health and safety as well as wildlife, riparian, and aquatic habitat. The data and information produced by this project will be shared amongst federal and state agencies and practitioners through scientific publications to broadly disseminate results to manage other similar amls more effectively.
