Description

This project is appropriate for the joint fire science programtask managing carbon emissions in ecosystems with deep organic soils and the research themes of 1)characterizing carbon stores, fluxes, and risk of loss, and 2) recovery of carbon after fire. Through testinghypotheses about the disturbance, permafrost, and successional processes that control soil c loss and recoveryfollowing wildfire, we will develop a mechanistic understanding of the vulnerability of the boreal forest soil csink to loss following wildfires. This loss represents a threshold change. Understanding where and when thischange is likely to occur is essential for mitigating c emissions from boreal wildfires and predicting feedbacksto the global c cycle and climate.
