Description
- Activities
- Geodetic network operations in magnet consist of traveling to sites to collect data, bringing IT back to our laboratory for preparation, processing, archiving, and sharing openly. Operations require the maintenance of GPS receiver systems that experience wear in the field, some of which have been in service for over 20 years because of careful preservation. We will process all GPS data collected using the nevada geodetic laboratory s system that includes data from 22,000 other stations around the world, thus ensuring consistent and state-of-the-art treatment and generation of data products.deliverables and expected outcomes: data collected will be converted to rinex and shared openly via the nevada geodetic laboratory website and earthscope archive. The products include position time series in text and graphic format, velocity fields, files cataloging equipment and earthquake events that may affect the time series, data holdings files, maps of the stations, tables of station and equipment properties, tables of coseismic displacements for earthquakes that displace stations in the network. Expected outcomes also include ad hoc response to collect data following earthquake or other geophysical events when they occur. The data will be openly available and feed into scientific publications and conference presentations performed outside the scope of work covered in this project.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Products developed using magnet data, including the USGS national seismic hazard mapping project, will be used to improve hazard assessments which enhance public safety, and provide crucial and actionable data about how the ground has deformed from earthquakes. Scientists who study active earth deformation associated with earthquakes, faults and volcanic systems will benefit from the dataset collected. The scientific community will benefit from the constraints that magnet data bring on deformation and geodynamics of the continents, including geodetic measurement of vertical land motions for climate studies, mantle flow from postseismic deformation and glacial isostatic adjustment to name a few.
