Description

Activities
Work with land managers to understand information gaps, current hemlock conservation efforts, and current forest regeneration conditions. Synthesize existing data on expected ranges of species that thrive in the shady, mesic, cool habitats occupied by hemlock and their ecosystem services, and forest adaptation strategies to encourage species projected to thrive in a changing climate. Work with land managers to develop regionally specific management plans to supplement hemlock conservation goals with climate adaptative practices to add diversity and resilience to disrupted forests. Develop a decision support tool to help land managers plan their response to hemlock loss in a changing climate. Present projects findings to forest managers and network events.deliverables and expected outcomes: lack of information about climate adaptive practices is one of the main reasons managers give for not integrating climate change into their management practices. This information will help land managers integrate climate adaptation into their forest management decisions around HWA and hemlock loss, with the final outcome being healthier, more resilient forests for northeastern wildlife and the general public.intended beneficiary(IES): state and regional foresters, natural resources extension staff, land trust managers, and other land managers for planning forest management for forests affected by HWA and hemlock mortalitysubrecipient activities: the university of massachusetts will subaward to the university of vermont and cornell university to execute the research objectives of this project.
