Description
- Activities
- 1. Forecast species distributions and relative abundances under two socio-climatic scenarios through 2100, accounting for multiple sources of uncertainty.2. Identify potential priority areas for future avian biodiversity under projected climate and land-use land-cover scenarios and connect to USFWS decision-making via creation of relative risk maps for infrastructure development and permitting.3. Approximate absolute risk for a subset of species with sufficient structured data to scale ebird relative abundance estimates to population size and refine relative risk maps to help USFWS quantify the combined impacts of incidental take, climate, and land-use land cover change on population persistence and direct compensatory mitigation.4. Leverage ebird as a monitoring platform for crowd-sourced structured data to fill in data gaps and help validate forecasted predictions.deliverables and expected outcomes: upon completion of this project, the recipient will have created novel biodiversity data products on future avian priority areas for migratory forest birds, a species group of high regulatory and conservation interest in the northeast united states. These products will include high-resolution data and visualizations of forecasted species distributions and avian priority areas that will be made freely available and accessible to a broad array of users. USFWS will then take these data products on avian priority areas and use them to identify areas of low-risk for infrastructure development and assess take limits at multiple scales based on future habitat and population conditions. The recipient will publish the results of the research in peer-reviewed journals. The recipient will adapt existing protocols for a structured monitoring program supported by citizen science via ebird, which will directly benefit USFWS during the project period and can be maintained or extended after the projects end. The recipient will publish these modified protocols so that other agencies and institutions can further adapt them to fit their specific information needs.intended beneficiary(IES): USFWS, USGS, land managers, and the publicsubrecipient activities: the university of massachusetts will subaward to cornell university to execute the research objectives of this project.
