Description

Activities
The recipient will: (1) compile information about the migratory and wintering characteristics of a representative pool of butterflies and birds that currently occur in the south-central US., (2) build a simulation model for three focal species of birds and butterflies based on current understanding of their nonbreeding ecology (i.e., migration characteristics, habitat associations, seasonal phenology, etc.) to simulate complex environments where species make a wide range of behavioral decisions based on perceptual cues, (3) run the model with projected future climate conditions based on downscaled climate model projections, and (4) evaluate the impacts of the future climate projections on the focal species and how they may be forced to adapt their behaviors. The recipient will work with partners such as state wildlife agencies, biodiversity researchers, and nonprofit organizations who are dedicated to the preservation of migratory species and their habitats.deliverables and expected outcomes:this approach will allow for the evaluation of breaking points across many different scenarios to better understand what conditions could foreshadow a collapse of ecological function, what mitigative actions could help build resilience in the landscape, and what responses might be effective at stemming impacts. The evaluation of three species of conservation concern across the south-central US will provide beneficial insights into what climate factors might further imperil the species and will be directly applicable to the management of these species. The recipient will produce a valuable, open-source simulation model tool that wildlife and habitat managers can use to better understand how species of concern are likely to be affected by projected changes in climate at relatively local scales which can then be used to evaluate potential mitigative or adaptive actions they might take to lessen the anticipated impacts. This tool will be portable to other regions of the US and applicable to a wider suite of species impacts, such as shifts in breeding habitat suitability under climate change.intended beneficiary(IES):beneficiaries of this project will include wildlife and habitat agencies and managers across the south-central united states.
