About this award

This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the National and Regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CFDA 15.820) program provides $147,013 to North Carolina State University (NC State) to conduct climate change vulnerability assessments for at-risk insect pollinator species in the Southeastern U.S. and U.S. Caribbean.

The key activities include: 1) convening an advisory committee of state, territory, and tribal partners to identify priority pollinator species to assess; 2) forming a technical team of pollinator experts; 3) synthesizing information on selected species; and 4) hosting a workshop to finalize the climate change vulnerability assessments. The results will be summarized in a user-friendly format for resource managers and published in an open-access journal to fill knowledge gaps about Southeastern and Caribbean pollinator species. The intended beneficiaries are state and tribal wildlife agencies, researchers, resource managers, and the public in the Southeastern U.S. region.

Description

Activities
Activities to be performed include 1) convening an advisory committee comprised of southeast state, territory, and tribal partners to directly inform which species to assess and provide input and guidance throughout the project 2) forming a technical team of about 10 pollinator experts with the assistance of collaborators 3) conducting in-depth syntheses of information for selected pollinator species and 4) hosting a workshop with up to 30 experts to conduct final assessments. This work will result in partner conceived climate change vulnerability assessments with direct end-user benefits being conducted for many at-risk insect pollinators across the southeastern US and US caribbean. The results can be used to improve climate adaptation by directly informing managers of a species vulnerability to climate change and thereby allowing them to make decisions, relative to other species, around its conservation priority and subsequent actions to take.deliverables and expected outcomes: deliverables and expected outcomes include results being summarized in a user-friendly format that will be determined by the advisory committee to ensure use by resource managers and accessibility. Additionally, the recipient aims to publish the synthesis of the species assessed in an open-access journal to fill the GAP of knowledge around southeastern and US caribbean pollinator species.intended beneficiary(IES): intended beneficiaries include state and tribal wildlife agencies in the southeast, defined as states and tribal lands falling within the boundaries set forth by the southeastern association of fish and wildlife agencies (seafwa), researchers, resource managers, and the public.
