Description

Activities
The project will: (1) expand a pilot survey to stakeholders (e.g., tribal nations, ngos, private landowners) and collect and disseminate information about climate adaptation measures used in wetlands (2) perform shorebird habitat analyses by leveraging existing datasets on waterbird habitat use and movements to project climate change effects on habitat for multiple additional groups of migratory waterbirds (ducks, geese, cranes) and 3) provide decision-support for conservation planning by producing tools that display rankings of wetland importance under future climate scenarios based on their role in maintaining habitat for waterbirds.deliverables and expected outcomes: deliverables will include: (1) fact sheets, outreach talks, webinars, and a stakeholder list-serve and or informational site, (2) an expanded stakeholder survey to increase understanding of manager adaptation approaches and willingness to implement such approaches to mitigate climate change effects on wetlands, (3) projections of wetland habitat availability for multiple waterbird species in spring and fall migration across the great plains that will guide future wetland conservation efforts in the region, and (4) decision-support tools that will guide contemporary and future management strategies and decision-making by identifying wetlands and wetland complexes that will provide key stopover habitat for waterbirds under various climate change scenarios. Dissemination of results among diverse stakeholders and to the larger scientific community will increase capacity of wetland management organizations to execute more effective wetland conservation and adaptation in a changing climate, enhance wetland resilience to climate change, and sustain wetland-provided ecosystem services.intended beneficiary(IES): this project will provide an opportunity to CO-exchange information and knowledge between researchers and stakeholders in the south-central and north-central U.S. IT will also provide web-based decision tools that can be used by resource management agencies and managers to guide prioritization of conservation efforts and management decisions for species likely to experience habitat changes.
