Description
Project titleshakealert 2024OPERATION improvement and expansion in eastern californiaproject PERIOD8 15 2024 through 8 14 2027AWARD purposethe shakealert earthquake early warning system currently provides alerts to the public viamass notification strategies to the public in california oregon and washington. The purpose of the system isto reduce the damage from earthquakes by saving lives and property by alerting the public of incoming strongshaking before IT arrives. The owens valley accommodates nearly 25% of the plate boundary motion fromthe pacific and north american plates. These faults along the eastern sierras could host large M7.5 earthquakes that could wreak havoc in population centers in california. There is limited seismicinstrumentation in this area. In this project shakealert 2024OPERATION improvement and expansion ineastern california the objectives are threefold. First the nevada seismological laboratory NSL will ensure thatseismic stations along the californianevada border are performing to shakealert standards and contributingtheir data to shakealert partners for use in earthquake early warning alerts. Second the nevadaseismological laboratory will install modern seismic equipment at previously occupied sites in the owensvalley area to provide seismic monitoring in this earthquake prone region of california and third improveoperations practices for remote stateofhealth monitoring equipment management and seismic instrumentmetadata management and delivery to partnering networks and scientists. These three areas will improve theoverall shakealert instrument network by adding stations to owens valley and improving the quality andreliability of data provided by nevada seismological laboratory stations contributing to shakealertearthquake early warning alerts in california.activities to be performedthe NSL will continue the operations and maintenance of 39 existing shakealert stations to ensure the stations perform reliably to shakealert standards. The nevada seismological laboratory will install 19 new seismic stations along the californianevada border with 15 stations in owens valley three in the northern foothills of the sierras and two in death valley national park. The station installations will reoccupy analog sites previously maintained by the NSL. Finally the nevada seismological laboratory will implement improved stateofhealth monitoring equipment management and seismic instrument metadata management toimprove the efficiency and reliability of operations and maintenance for shakealert seismic stations.deliverables and expected outcomesupon successful completion of this project the nevada seismologicallaboratory will be responsible for operating 58 seismic stations that contribute to shakealert. This includesstations that are currently installed that are not reliable enough for shakealert along with the 19 newlyinstalled stations in this project. We expect to achieve 95% station availability to shakealert from these 58STATIONS by the end of this project. We anticipate that our improved stateofhealth monitoring will enable usto perform preventative maintenance on stations by identifying powersystems issues before stations areoffline and provide robust metadata through common tools used by other contributing seismic networks.intended beneficiariesoverall the primary beneficiary to this work will be the public and institutions incalifornia that can take advantage of the warning times provided by shakealert. Secondly this improvednetwork in owens valley will provide invaluable data to seismologists and other earth scientists interested inunderstanding the seismicity in the walker lane and how tectonic plate motions are accommodatedthroughout the western united states. All data generated from this project will be made publicly availablethrough data portals widely used by the seismological community.
