Description
Project titleimproving the performance of the finitefault rupture detector finder algorithm in the US west coast shakealert system iiiproject PERIOD8 15 2024 through 8 14 2027AWARD purposein october 2019 california introduced statewide earthquake alerts for the public through the US shakealert system which was extended to oregon and washington in 2021. Currently two seismic epic and finder and one geodetic algorithm gfastpgd are used in shakealert. Finder finitefault rupture detector is able to determine the dimensions and orientations of fault ruptures in real time and proves particularly important for medium to large earthquakes. Motivated by observed performance the proposed work focuses on improving finder particularly in large earthquakes including cascadia megathrust events and intense aftershock sequences as well as on other tasks regarding finder performance and operations within shakealert.activities to be performedthe emphasis of this project is on the reliable and sustainable operation and maintenance of the current shakealert production system and on improving the value of the system for its users. Motivated by observations and findings during the previous funding period the proposed work focuses on the following objectives objective 1EXTREME events ilarge earthquakes including cascadia megathrust events objective 2EXTREME events iiintense aftershock sequences objective 3FINDER performance and operations within shakealertdeliverables and expected outcomeswith the proposed work the recipient intends to provide a new version with several interim updates of the finder code that will improve the performance of shakealert in terms of speed eligibility and accuracy especially for large earthquakes outofnetwork events and aftershock sequences. The code will be regularly checked into the shakealert repository thoroughly tested and changes documented. The recipient will publish two scientific papers demonstrating and documenting these updates.intended beneficiaryies U.S. Geological survey earthquake hazards program assistance inhabitants of CA or and WA emergency management state agencies private and public entities wishing to take protective action upon notification of imminent ground shaking due to an earthquake.subrecipient activitiesn a
