Description
- Activities
- This project will develop fine-spatial scale representations of hydrological conditions for use in climate change adaptation and mitigation planning. This project will apply the BCM, a hydro-climatic model produced by the US geological survey, and use established methodologies to generate and calibrate 90M-resolution maps of hydrological conditions for approximately 200,000 KM2 comprising the southern of california. The project will assess newly available measures of landscape evapotranspiration to see whether BCM actual evapotranspiration can be improved. This project will provide 90M historical (1896-2024) BCM data and six climate projections to 2100 from the collection of 10 gcms produced under the california 4TH climate change assessment. This project will calculate 30-year summaries that are useful for agencies and groups working on climate resilience in natural ecosystems, regional conservation planning, and risk reduction objectives such as minimizing extreme wildfires. This project will also review data sources needed to expand the BCM to the southwestern USA. This review will identify the preferable data sources and the steps needed to produce the BCM over the larger extent. This project will review existing websites and programs to identify opportunities to make the resulting spatial data available to the public for online viewing, online analyses, and data access. As part of this review, this project will engage stakeholders in southern california to get their perspective on how they would use the data and what format they would need the data to be provided.deliverables and expected outcomes: 1) spatial data raster-format maps for monthly data from 1896-2024, and projections insimilar format from 2006- 2100. Variables: precipitation, max and min temperature, climatic water deficit, potential ET, actual ET, recharge, runoff, april 1 snowpack, soilwater storage.2) 30-year summaries for: 1900-1931 1931-1960 1961-1990 1991-2020 2020-2049 2050-2079 2080- 2100.3) a report of data types, sources, and steps needed to extend the BCM to southwest US.4) a report on the current opportunities to partner with existing groups and data providers tomake the output BCM data available for online viewing and analyses. Intended beneficiary(IES): 1) federal agencies including US forest service US geological survey.2) state agencies including CA department of fish and wildlife, department of waterresources, CAL fire.3) regional conservation and climate adaptation groups.
