Description

Project title expanding lessons from data rich inland fisheries to data limited scenarios for climate adaptationproject dates 8 1 2023 through 12 31 2025AWARD purpose inland fisheries have remarkable cultural, economic, and subsistence value. However, climate change brings new stresses to land locked fisheries that raise important challenges for resource managers. One key challenge in inland fisheries is how to best assess and manage data limited fisheries when resources are finite, and uncertainty is pervasive. To address this, the project team will use age structured simulation models to examine whether indicators of fish population status commonly measured by managers can serve as a short cut to more data and capacity intensive approaches. Further, they will work and communicate directly with state and tribal fisheries managers to better understand the challenges faced when making difficult conservation decisions given climate change. These findings will be shared and discussed with fisheries managers and researchers in the upper midwest in a formal summary workshop. Through the combination of modeling exercises and management discussions, the project team will establish whether there are metrics that can be used by managers to give the best information about fish population status, change, and resilience given climate change. Accurately quantifying inland fisheries status and dynamics is critical to understanding how these systems contribute to local and indigenous communities and how this may be impacted by global change.activities to be performed the project team will use age structured simulation modeling and meetings with managers and relevant stakeholders to determine the efficacy of commonly used assessment methods and approaches used in inland fisheries.deliverables and expected outcomes this project will result in the development of a generic age structured fisheries model and will conduct synthesis conversations with managers. The project team will hold a summary workshop with managers and partners to share results and discuss the implications for management decisions at the end of the project. From this work, multiple scientific papers will be published. Project principal investigators and student researchers will give talks at local, regional, and national conferences. Publications and presentations will be amplified by press releases, media outreach, management briefs, blog posts, and social media. The project team will work with the USGS climate adaptation science center communications team to amplify outreach efforts.intended beneficiary(IES) key management agency partners on this project are the great lakesindian fish and wildlife commission (glifwc), minnesota department of natural resources(MN DNR), and wisconsin department of natural resources (wdnr). The proposed work isclosely linked to management and will require frequent interactions with agency researchers andmanagers, and they represent key beneficiaries of this work. There are also manystakeholders including individual fisheries managers, federal scientists, tribal nations, anglinggroups, and lake associations that will benefit from this research given the broad extent ofwalleye fisheries across the upper midwest.
